GOD’S LAW, JUSTICE , STATITUTE IN THE BIBLE.

When God organized the people of Israel into a nation under the Sinai Covenant, through the human leadership of Moses, He
authorized an administrative system that included not only priests but also judges to keep them on the path of righteousness
(Deuteronomy 1:16-17). These judges were to perform their assigned duties according to the laws, statutes and judgments that God
would reveal to them, either directly (as with the Ten Commandments) or through His messengers.
The Hebrew word translated “law” is to rah. When used with the definite article (the law), it refers either to law in general or to
some specific aspect of law. It often refers to the entire body of law that God gave to the people of Israel.
God’s judgments illustrate how righteous decisions should be made according to the principles revealed in His laws and statutes.
He instructs all judges who are responsible for making judgments not specifically covered in the Torah: “In controversy they shall
stand as judges, and judge it according to My judgments. They shall keep My laws and My statutes . . .” (Ezekiel 44:24).
Moses sets up a system of trial courts and courts of appeal that are surprisingly similar to the structure of modern courts of law. He
commands the people to obey their decisions. “You must carry out fully the law that they interpret for you or the ruling that they
announce to you; do not turn aside from the decision that they announce to you, either to the right or to the left” (Deuteronomy. 17:11).
This is not to say that civil disobedience never has a place. But these instances are rare and always involve personal sacrifice in
pursuit of the common good. Subverting the law for self- interested purposes, by contrast, is not justifiable.
God’s statutes and laws are foundational elements of the biblical narrative, reflecting His divine will and moral order for humanity
In the Old Testament, God’s statutes and laws are primarily revealed through the Mosaic Law, given to the Israelite at Mount
Sinai. This body of law is encapsulated in the Torah, the first five books of the Bible. The laws include moral, ceremonial, and
civil regulations, all of which are designed to set Israel apart as a holy nation.
The Ten Commandments, found in Exodus 20:1-17 and Deuteronomy 5:6-21, serve as the core of God’s moral law. These
commandments address the relationship between God and humanity, as well as interpersonal relationships. For instance, Exodus
20:3 states, “You shall have no other gods before Me,” emphasizing the exclusivity of worship due to God alone
.God’s statutes and laws serve several purposes. They reveal God’s character, demonstrating His holiness, justice, and mercy. They
also provide a standard of righteousness, showing humanity its need for divine grace. As Psalm 19:7 declares, “The law of the
LORD is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the LORD is trustworthy, making wise the simple.”

In the New Testament, Jesus Christ is presented as the fulfillment of the Law. Matthew 5:17 records Jesus saying, “Do not think
that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.” Through His life, death,
and resurrection, Jesus embodies the perfect obedience to God’s laws and provides a means for humanity to be reconciled to God.
The New Testament writers, particularly the Apostle Paul, expound on the relationship between the Law and the Gospel.
In Romans 3:20, Paul states, “Therefore no one will be justified in His sight by works of the law. For the law merely brings
awareness of sin.” The Law reveals sin, but it is through faith in Christ that believers receive righteousness.
God’s statutes and laws, as revealed in the Bible, are integral to understanding His will and purpose for humanity. They provide a
framework for righteous living and point to the need for a Savior, fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Through the guidance of the Holy
Spirit, believers are empowered to live in accordance with God’s eternal principles.
God’s Statutes:
- Love God (with your heart, soul, and might) – by loving God in such a way, everything else will follow.
- Listen to God’s voice and His commandments.
- Seek God entirely; focus on His commandments.
- Do what God considers to be right; walk in God’s ways.
- Obey God’s laws, testimonies, and righteous rules.
